My mother worked there. I was 12 years old at the time. That's where it all began. It was the first arcade game I really got into and played on a regular basis aside from SFII, which happened to be next to the MK machine. I remember seeing it for the first time. I glanced over at it several times whenever I was playing SFII. The very first thing that caught my attention was when I witnessed Scorpion throwing his harpoon at an opponent in the game's attract mode. The blood that emitted from the opponent's body and hearing the infamous "Get Over Here!" is what sold me. My jaw dropped in awe. It was something I had never seen before, and so different from SFII. I stopped playing SFII and immediately had to play it. Despite the several gaming magazines I bought each month, I had never heard about MK before. Luckily, I found a moves list in a 1992 issue of EGM, which happened to be the first EGM I ever purchased. To my surprise, the game contained death moves. My interest in SFII quickly dwindled. I pumped as much as $20 to $60 a week into that machine. MK had carved its way into my soul. The dark theme, the characters, the storyline, followed by its incredible sequel(s) and the adrenalin rush of playing against crowds in the local bowling alley, I fell in love with it all. Nobody (unless they were nice) would tell you a damn thing if you asked. I often learned finishing moves by means of watching players' actions or from game magazines. There was nothing better than inflicting that upon a player the very thing he refused to tell you after cleverly peeking at their controls. I had no computer or internet back then, only my eyes and a few arcade buddies who occasionally showed me a few things. I even managed to get a hold of a few incomplete FAQs from Usenet that I still have to this day. When MK came home on September 13th, 1993, it was the event of a gamer's lifetime. Mortal Monday they called it. I was a bit disappointed from the lack of an arcade-perfect port, but I was too into the game to care. Despite sales and the lack of gore, I favored the SNES version. When MKII came home the following year, the SNES version more than made up for what the first lacked thanks to the ESRB rating system that was established. It may be obvious by now that MK has played a big part in my life. There was a time when I was very unstable. During the worst times, MK gave me a sense of pride. It basically saved my life in a time when I saw no light and felt no love. It kept me focused on something other than foolish thoughts. Many of the kids that play MK today have never experienced MK in its prime, when it revolutionized arcade fighting games. Therefore they don't have much of an appreciation for the series for what it really is. They see only blood and fatalities, a cool-looking character, or a poorly translated port. But to each his/her own. I must thank Ed and John for creating this great franchise. I hope my work reflects my appreciation for what MK has given me, and I hope all of you MK fans out there enjoy it as much as I enjoy working on it. Many thanks to the people who have contributed to this project. Before you journey into this book, be sure you're viewing it with a fixed-width font, such as Courier. If you defeat him, you will receive 10,000,000 points (1,000,000 on the Genesis version). To fight Reptile, you must be on The Pit stage. Before the round begins, a silhouette must fly past the moon. This means you have an opportunity to fight Reptile. You then must defeat your opponent with a Double Flawless without the use of Block for two consecutive rounds, then finish your opponent with a fatality (excluding the stage fatality, with the exception of Liu Kang's two-for-one). This only works on a single player game. If you have done everything correctly, you will receive this message... YOU HAVE FOUND ME NOW PROVE YOURSELF !! 1.6-2) Test Your Might —————————————————————————— Rapidly tap LP+LK to raise the yellow strength meter. Once the meter is above the red line, press Block to break. In the following order, you must break Wood, Stone, Steel, Ruby, and Diamond. The bonus round appears after every 3 fights. It will take approximately 15 battles to reach the 5th level. If you lose and fail to continue, you will start on the 1st level on the next Test Your Might challenge. If you reach the 5th level, you will be challenged with the 5th level until you lose a battle and fail to continue. Point value for each level: LEVEL POINTS Wood 100,000 Stone 200,000 Steel 500,000 Ruby 1,000,000 Diamond 2,000,000 1.6-3) The Pit —————————————————— The Pit stage is a fatality within itself. After defeating your opponent, finish him/her with an uppercut. This will send them plunging into The Pit's bottom, meeting a gruesome demise. ××××××××××××××××××××××× 1.7) Version History ××××××××××××××××××××××× • Proto 4.0 (Information on this version is unknown nor confirmed by me.) To do this is not an easy task and doesn't work every time, but the trick is to tap F+HP very quickly (as in lightning fast) after performing his Fatality (F,F,F,HP). If done correctly, Cage will go into a second fatality pose and knock off a second head. I've never successfully knocked off a third head, but more than one source say it is possible. Cage has also been known to miss on the first and/or second head decapitation. You may also substitute a second head decapitation with a Split Punch or Shadow Kick. Other glitches include Liu Kang (see below) and Johnny Cage missing their opponents completely if their Fatality is executed while the opponent is prone, whether on the ground or in the air. For the rest of the kombatants, the animation after the opponent is hit will be exactly the same as that of a normally executed Fatality, yet the bodies suddenly appear standing up. All misses will still register as a Fatality and you will still receive the 100,000 points bonus. Liu Kang has one more glitch that's also worth noting - If the Fatality is performed more than half a screen away, Kang will miss completely, making the opponent subject to one of the following: 1. Immediately perform the fatality again, resulting to a second somersault without pause and an uppercut. 2. Execute a Flying Kick or sweep on the opponent, and then... a.) Sweep fallen opponent back up and down repeatedly. b.) Jump back, perform fatality again and let fatality time expire. c.) Execute three Fireballs then perform fatality again. d.) Execute four Fireballs then execute the Flying Kick. e.) Four Fireballs, perform fatality again or substitute the fatality with a fifth fireball. Last but not least, it is possible to perform a Fatality while the opponent is still lying on the ground. To do this, finish off your opponent's life bar using a move with little recovery time such as a throw, sweep or jump kick, then quickly perform the Fatality. If timed correctly, the opponent will be lying on the ground while your fighter performs their Fatality. ——— BOSS GLITCHES ——— What: Goro becomes "frozen" and doesn't move. Who: Scorpion vs. Goro How: Perform Scorpion's Teleport Punch immediately followed by his Harpoon. If Goro blocks the Harpoon, he'll often be frozen in his blocking stance. At this point you can either sweep him to death or hit him with anything else to unfreeze him. ×××××××××××××××××××××××× 1.9) Rumors & Tidbits ×××××××××××××××××××××××× This section is devoted to well-known rumors that were never proven to be true, or false for that matter, complete with backgrounds and methods that have been tossed around the internet. ——— ERMAC ——— Possibly the biggest MK rumor of them all - Ermac, a red ninja, was discovered by Tony Casey, also responsible for the only existing proof of Ermac, a Polaroid which was posted in the October, 1993 issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly (page 98). The name Ermac is short for "Error Macro", according to Ed Boon, and is the result of the machine having some kind of error. In the Game Audits located in the Test Menu, "ERMACS" is listed below "REPTILE BATTLES". However, it was removed on the T-Unit releases, which could explain the board switch (no more "Error Macros"). Ermac has also been known to be a red version of Scorpion, with "SCORPION" in the life bar. Below are two methods that have circulated the internet, though never proven to be true (or false). Method #1: 1.) Must find and fight Reptile. 2.) Must be on second Warrior Shrine. 3.) Do not use block. 4.) A Flawless Victory must be obtained using only punches OR kicks. 5.) At least one combo must be executed. 6.) A Fatality is not required, but must not be performed by Scorpion or Sonya. 7.) Must knock opponent perfectly within the oval on the floor of the Warrior Shrine. Method #2: 1.) Must have machine's difficulty set on 5 (Very Hard). 2.) Must be on Warrior Shrine. 3.) Must get Double Flawless Victory using punches only. 4.) When the screen reads "FINISH HIM/HER!", you must knock your opponent under their statue. ——— SECOND FATALITIES ——— According to some sources, the game has animation capability for three additional fatalities, though these three cannot be used in any current version of Mortal Kombat. Do to time constraints, these three fatalities were not implemented: CAGE - A Shadow Kick resulting to the player being hurdled across the playing field and smashing against the opposite wall. No extensive blood. GORO - Goro crushes your head, complete with a loud popping sound. Blood splatters as in Raiden's fatality. TSUNG - Tsung pulls out his sword and decapitates your head. This was apparently the original reason head popping was used for, and the reason that Tsung has a sword by his side. ——— MISCELLANEOUS ——— Rumors that are absolutely false: - Fighting guards or dragons - Playing as Tsung or Goro - Playing as Reptile or Ermac TIDBIT: Mortal Kombat is the only MK game to use a points system, excluding Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero/Special Forces; Both made use of experience points and were never released in arcades. TIDBIT: The MK T-Unit was an official Midway game board. Basically, Midway came out with a better piece of hardware (the T-Unit motherboard) which is what NBA Jam and MKII run on. Toward the end of the MK hardware run, they switched to this motherboard. If you look at it, it looks just like an NBA Jam board, but with MK ROMs on it. The version of the game (program ROMs) are at UG12 and UJ12 as opposed to U89 and U105 on the older version. The version ROMs for the T-Unit won't work on the older MK board, so you would have to have a T-Unit to run 5.0. Additionally, MK 4.0 was released for the T-Unit board, however, it had bugs in it. Because of this, Midway released version 5.0 for the T-Unit which was basically just a bug fix release. ×××××××××××××××××××××× 1.10) Scoring Table ×××××××××××××××××××××× FIGHTING Low Punch 500 High Punch 500 Death Punch 500 Crouched Kick 500 Defensive Kick 1000 Flying Punch 1000 Sweep 1000 Head Blow 2000 High Kick 2000 Jump Kick 2000 Low Kick 2000 Roundhouse 2000 Uppercut 2000 Throw 5000 Knee 5000 SPECIAL Time Bonus Seconds left on timer x 1000 Strength Not available Fatality 100,000 Flawless Victory 200,000 Double Flawless 500,000 Defeat Reptile 10,000,000 TEST YOUR MIGHT Wood 100,000 Stone 200,000 Steel 500,000 Ruby 1,000,000 Diamond 2,000,000 JOHNNY CAGE Green Flame 2000 Shadow Kick 5000 Split Punch 5000 RAIDEN Lightning Bolt 2000 Torpedo Push 5000 KANO Knife Toss 2000 Cannonball 5000 LIU KANG Fireball 2000 Flying Kick 2000 SCORPION Harpoon 2000 Teleport Punch 2000 SUB-ZERO Slide 1000 SONYA Ring Toss 2000 Leg Grab 2000 (grab) 5000 (slam) ×××××××××××××××××××××××× 1.11) Quick Reference ×××××××××××××××××××××××× • Johnny Cage F,F,F,HP (c) • Kano HCF,LP (c) • Raiden F,B,B,B,HP (c) • Liu Kang 360f (a) • Sub-Zero F,D,F,HP (c) • Scorpion U,U (s) • Sonya F,F,B,B,BL (a) ×××××××××××××××××× 1.12) Test Menu ×××××××××××××××××× ××××××××××××××××× 1.13) Epilogue ××××××××××××××××× • Johnny Cage Through the battles and life or death situations faced during the tournament, Johnny Cage learns the true importance of his fighting skills. He also realizes the full potential of the tournament. He returns to Hollywood after defending his new title as Grand Champion. Cage goes on to film Mortal Kombat: The Movie and its many successful sequels. • Kano With the defeat of Goro and Shang Tsung, Kano will bring his own brand of treachery to the tournament. His Black Dragon organization forms a monopoly over the contest that brings shame and torment to all those involved. Their reign will end in anarchy and death. It will result in the final dismantling of the tournament and the battle of the Sans. • Raiden Raiden's victory comes as no surprise to him. He was never impressed by Shang Tsung's inferior sorcery, Goro's brute force, or the challenge of the other contestants. He quickly becomes bored with his mortal competition and soon invites other gods to participate in the contest. The ensuing battles rage on for years. And the wars result in our world's final destruction. Have a nice day • Liu Kang After defeating mighty Goro and putting an end to Shang Tsung's rule over the tournament, Kang is able to return the contest to its rightful hosts - the Shaolin Temples. Kang's heroics will always be remembered. He will continue the traditions of the Shaolin Temples and restore the true pride and respect of this once great tournament. • Sub-Zero After receiving the title of Grand Champion, Sub-Zero disappears back into the shadows from which he came. His only goal in the tournament was the assassination of Shang Tsung. He was paid a large some of money by one of Tsung's wealthy enemies. With his mission accomplished, Sub-Zero will collect his fortune and retire from his dangerous profession. • Scorpion Marked for death years ago by the Lin Kuei, Scorpion was murdered by Sub- Zero. He left behind a wife and child in his former life but was allowed to return and avenge his death. Even with Scorpion's triumph in the tournament and new title as Grand Champion, the price he paid was high. If you defeat him, you will receive 10,000,000 points. To fight Reptile, you must be on The Pit stage. Unlike the arcade version, a silhouette passing the moon is not required. Simply defeat your opponent with a Double Flawless without the use of Block for two consecutive rounds, then finish your opponent with a finishing move (excluding The Pit, with the exception of Liu Kang's two- for- one). This only works on a single player game. If you have done everything correctly, you will receive this message... YOU HAVE FOUND ME NOW PROVE YOURSELF !! 2.6-2) Test Your Might —————————————————————————— Rapidly tap (B)+(A) to raise the yellow strength meter. Once the meter is above the red line, press (L)/(R) to break. Point value for each level: LEVEL POINTS Wood 100,000 Stone 200,000 Steel 500,000 Ruby 1,000,000 Diamond 2,000,000 2.6-3) The Pit —————————————————— The Pit stage is a fatality within itself. After defeating your opponent, finish him/her with an uppercut. This will send them plunging into The Pit's bottom, meeting a gruesome demise. You will receive the finishing bonus of 100,000 points. 2.6-4) Game Genie ————————————————————— • Blood Okay red blood ................................................ REPTILE (HUMAN) If you're playing a 2-player game, player 2 can play as Reptile, sort of. Start a 2-player game and have player 2 choose Scorpion or Sub-Zero as their fighter. Have player 2 beat up player 1 and don't continue. The next match will then be against Reptile. Have player 1 join in. Player 1 will automatically start as Scorpion. When player 2 begins playing, Scorpion or Sub-Zero will be in Reptile's green uniform and it will say "Reptile" in your life bar. But even though you look like Reptile, you still can't do both Scorpion's and Sub- Zero's special moves. You can ONLY perform the special moves and Fatality of whom you chose. If you choose someone other than Scorpion and Sub-Zero, your fighter will be a strange green color. For an added bonus, try the code 676A-47AF. This code has a little glitch, but still works fine. REPTILE (CPU) VS. REPTILE (CPU) This method does not allow you to play as Reptile, but rather watch a VS match between two Reptiles. On a single player game, start as anyone you want. After you beat the person from the 1st match you will start another match, this time against Reptile. You will keep fighting Reptile until you turn off the Game Genie. If you turn off the Game Genie, you will continue your game as usual. If you turn the Game Genie back on, you will fight Reptile again after you beat your opponent. If you lose a match to Reptile and you continue, you will continue as Scorpion. But if you lose and don't continue, you can watch the computer play against itself as Reptile vs. Reptile (one says Scorpion). If you want to start a new game, let the computer beat itself and don't continue. You will then go to the title screen. 2.6-5) Pro Action Replay ———————————————————————————— • Unformatted 7E197204 Allows player 1 to play as reptile 80816801 Start on Match 2 80816802 Start on Match 3 80816803 Start on Match 4 80816804 Start on Match 5 80816805 Start on Match 6 80816806 Start on Mirror Match 80816807 Start on Endurance 1 match 80816808 Start on Endurance 2 match 80816809 Start on Endurance 3 match 8081680A Start on match with Goro 8081680B Start on match with Shang Tsung 808B8102 Each round is 199 seconds (time counts down twice) 8084CF00 Always fight in the the Courtyard 80905378 All throws do more damage 8095DFA5 Infinite Time 8097AD00 First strike of any kind wins round 80991700 All strikes do minimal damage (all equal to 1 hit point)--2-Player game only 809FB280 Alwys get flawless victory bonus 80D16A82 As Cage Tap back to Start round over 80D16A84 As cage tap back andreturn to choose yourwarrior screen 80D16A8A As Cage Tap Back And he looks at you (Screen may Freeze) 80D16A8F As cage go close and tap back and he'll kiss enemy! 80D16AB1 As cage tap back and you'll do a foot sweep 80D16AB8 As Cage go close to enemy and tap back and strange things happen 80D16ABB As cage tap back and you'll spin in air until enemy hits you 80D16AC4 Pick Cage and during fight keep tapping back to have him fight for you. 80D16AC9 As Cage hold back to cause opponent slo-mo 80D16ACC As Cage, during a fight tap back. doesn't move. How: Perform Scorpion's Teleport Punch immediately followed by his Harpoon. If Goro blocks the Harpoon, he'll often be frozen in his blocking stance. At this point you can either sweep him to death or hit him with anything else to unfreeze him. --- Glitch #2 --- Who: Rayden / 3rd Endurance What: Makes Goro's color palette a glitchy silver color during fight. How: Kill the last person of the third endurance match with Rayden's fatality. When they burn up and Goro comes down, he will be a glitchy silver color. He will automatically revert back to normal after the first round. --- Glitch #3 --- Who: Sub-Zero vs. Anyone What: Sub-Zero's opponent re-appears after fatality. How: Do either 4 throws or 4 uppercuts. This will leave the opponent on danger. Now throw an Ice Blast - It will kill them. When it says "Finish Him/Her", if you do the fatality immediately, he will do the Fatality as normal, but after he shatters them, they will re-appear in their standing animation (but they can't move or block). If you wait a little while, then do the fatality, sometime when they are frozen, they will appear behind the frozen body and be in their dizzy animation. If you kill them with an Ice Blast while they are in the air, they will simply be on the ground when they unfreeze. --- Glitch #4 --- Who: Kano vs. Anyone What: You can do a Knife Toss with Kano by simply hitting block. How: Kill the opponent with Kano's Knife Toss and don't let go of block. The next round, Kano will continue to throw out knife after knife, one at a time, until you release block. --- Glitch #5 --- Who: Rayden vs. Rayden What: At the start of a round, the two characters start very close to each other instead of having the typical 1/2 screen space between them. How: I'm not sure of the exact details on how to do this, but many times in a Rayden vs. Rayden match, they will start very close together at the beginning of the second and/or third round. --- Glitch #6 --- The Ultimate Glitch ¯ ¯ ¯ Effects of TUG: - Characters can walk through each other. - Characters can walk off screen. As Sonya, be in the corner, just a bit away from the very edge, and have your opponent within Leg Grab range. Do the Leg Grab and then, as they are slightly airborne from the bounce off the ground, do an uppercut or standing HP/LP to juggle them. This will activate TUG. Doing a throw or another Leg Grab will deactivate TUG. This will not work against Liu Kang. Things to do with TUG: - Execute Sonya's Fatality (F,F,B,B,BL) from off screen. - As Sub-Zero, be in the corner with the opponent so that you are both facing the same way. Kill them with a sweep (looks weird), then do his Fatality (F,D,F,HP). He will be well out of range for the backhand which is suppose to shatter them. They still shatter even though Sub-Zero is almost a half-screen away. - Perform Scorpion's Harpoon with the opponent about 1 and 3/4 screens away. - Be in the corner with Rayden and have your opponent jump all the way to the other corner. Do a Teleport and the view will ZOOM over to the other corner. ×××××××××××××××××××××××× 2.8) Rumors & Tidbits ×××××××××××××××××××××××× ——— ERMAC/PLAYABLE BOSSES ——— Ermac was rumored to be in the home versions as well. Players scrambled to find him, but with no luck. Goro and Shang Tsung were also rumored to be playable in the home versions. This was only so for Goro on the Game Boy version and with the use of a Game Genie code for the Genesis version that allowed Sub-Zero to morph into random kombatants everytime his Slide was executed, even Goro on occasion. TIDBIT: In all home conversions, the name "Raiden" was changed to "Rayden" due to the name already being taken in the home market. TIDBIT: The word "fatality" was removed and replaced with "finishing" to correspond with the conversion's toned down violence. ××××××××××××××××××××××× 2.9) Quick Reference ××××××××××××××××××××××× • Johnny Cage F,F,F,(Y) (c) • Kano HCF,(B) (c) • Rayden F,B,B,B,(Y) (c) • Liu Kang 360f (a) • Sub-Zero F,D,F,(Y) (c) • Scorpion U,U (s) • Sonya F,F,B,B,(L)/(R) (a) ××××××××××××××××××××× 2.10) Game Options ××××××××××××××××××××× ×××××××××××××××××××××××× 2.11) Port Comparison ×××××××××××××××××××××××× This section compares the SNES port to the other versions of MK. With the aid of his pupil Goro he was to unbalance the furies and doom the planet to a chaotic existence. By seizing control of the Shaolin Tournament he tried to tip the scales of order towards chaos. Only seven warriors survived the battles and Shang Tsung's scheme would come to a violent end at the hands of Liu Kang.
